As passionate about family medicine as he is about rural medicine, Dr. Ian Alexander has been a champion for strengthening primary care across Manitoba. He’s made this case as a physician, an educator, and as a medical leader, inlcuding during his time as President of the Manitoba College of Family Physicians.

After establishing a family medicine practice in Swan River, Dr. Andani challenged the practice ready assessment, earning a fellowship in Emergency Medicine. He has further expanded his expertise into a uniquely diverse practice, including critical care, oncology and addictions medicine. He is well-published, including writing a chapter for the Manitoba Opioid Agonist Therapy Practice Manual. Currently, he serves as medical consultant for First Nations and Inuit Health Branch and the first Associate Chief Medical Officer for Shared Health.

A strong voice for residents, Dr. Aquin has thoughtfully and passionately pursued improving resident health and wellness during his time as President of PARIM. His expertise was invaluable during the pandemic, when he advocated for appropriate precautions and accommodations for residents, who were uniquely impacted during the disruptions caused by COVID-19. He recently completed his residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and started a new position as a Medical Officer of Health in Manitoba.

A rising star in Manitoba’s surgical community, Dr. Archer is committed to improving care and outcomes for children, including those with developmental dysplasia of the hip. Her dedication to pediatric orthopedics is widely acknowledged and celebrated, as is her leadership in establishing a fellowship in this subspecialty here in Manitoba.

A pediatric intensivist at Children’s Hospital, Dr. Brulé is an expert in critical care and quality improvement. Her work is improving outcomes by reducing hospital infections and implementing an early warning system for deterioration. As an assistant professor at UM, she mentors trainees, conducts research, and actively contributes to national initiatives aiming to standardize and improve pediatric critical care while promoting diversity and inclusivity. Dr. Brulé’s passion centers on enhancing the lives of Manitoba’s children through her multifaceted approach.

Dr. Coleman is devoted to improving primary care in Northern Manitoba. He maintains a family practice in a remote First Nation community. He helped develop a new family medicine residency program site in Thompson. During the pandemic, when the community lacked access to alcohol addiction treatment, he worked with community leaders and Indigenous partner organizations to develop a managed alcohol program. He works with the region’s palliative care program to expand access to a palliative approach to care.

Dr. Desilets is passionate about the rewarding diversity of full scope rural medicine. She successfully navigated the challenges of obtaining surgical and endoscopic privileges, previously an uncommon endeavor for many family physicians. She is passionate about professional networking, physician advocacy, and equal representation in the delivery of exceptional health care to Manitobans. Her solutions-focused approach to health system challenges is as effective with system leaders and when she advocates for her patients and her profession in the local news.

Dr. Dhala, a family physician in Southern-Health Santé-Sud, has a broad practice including Primary Care, Cancer Care, Emergency and Hospital Medicine. He is the Chief of Staff of Boundary Trails Health Centre and Medical Director of C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre. Colleagues are inspired by his leadership, especially during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a strong advocate for physicians and has redefined health care service delivery in his community.

A subspecialty gynecologist, Dr. Evans is responsible for bringing a world-class service to Manitoba to help women with endometriosis and pelvic pain. The winner of several other awards, Dr. Evans opened the Saint Boniface Hospital Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis Clinic, is the Women’s Health Medical Manager of Quality at the St. Boniface Hospital, and an Assistant Professor and Head of the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Section at UM.

Dr. Hodgson has been called an exceptional leader by his colleagues, and as a Family Physician with Ongomiizwin Health Services has been pivotal in influencing safe, culturally appropriate care for the Peguis, Fisher River, and Kinonjeoshtegon First Nations. He has won many research and leadership awards and was Chief Resident of the Indigenous Family Medicine Site in British Columbia from 2018 – 2019 before taking on the role of Chief of Staff at Percy Moore Hospital.

Dr. Hosseini is known for her strong advocacy for Women’s Health, and as a fierce leader in physician wellness. Still early in her career, she has made a measurable impact including in rural and northern Manitoba. She has played a critical role in securing equitable access to gynecologic surgery for women during the pandemic, and will continue this work as the Clinical Lead of Acute Care Gynecology at HSC Women’s Hospital and Gynecology Specialty Lead at Victoria General Hospital.

A rising star as both a physician and scientist, Dr. Houston is a hematologist who has also pursued her PhD. She has become an expert in innovative clinical trial methods and has helped to lead several large international studies. She is now leading a national platform trial aimed to improve patient prioritized outcomes for patients with blood cancer.

Many of Manitoba’s recent advancements in Addiction Medicine can be traced back to Dr. Knight, who has risen to be an expert and leader in this important field. She serves as Addiction Services Medical Director at HSC, the Medical Lead for Rapid Access to Addiction Medicine provincially, and the Addiction Program Medical Director with Four Arrows Regional Health Authority. She is also the inaugural Program Director for the Addiction Medicine Enhanced Skills residency program, and the president-elect for the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Leeies is an organ donation, critical care and emergency medicine physician who leads a patient-oriented research program focused on health equity for 2SLGBTQIA+ populations. He founded the Manitoba Emergency Medicine Research Advancement Fund. His research and advocacy work focus on the meaningful engagement of patients and equity-deserving populations. Dr. Leeies is leading efforts to modernize the documentation of gender, sex and other determinants of health at registration and triage in Manitoba.

Dr. Lother is an award-winning Critical Care and Infectious Disease physician and a rising star clinician-scientist. Dr. Lother is doing innovative work in clinical trials to improve outcomes for pneumonia. He is a provincial expert in COVID-19 and contributed vastly to rapid knowledge generation through COVID-19 research. Colleagues are inspired by the impact Dr. Lother has on patients through his academic and clinical roles and expect he will make important discoveries resulting in global and lasting impacts.

Dr. Orlikow is a lecturer at UM and practices inpatient Internal Medicine and Respirology at HSC and the Grace while maintaining a busy outpatient Respirology practice. He enjoys leading respiratory physiology tutorials with medical students and teaching Internal Medicine residents and Respirology fellows on the wards and in clinic. Colleagues commend his commitment to patient and family-centred care, his dedication to collaborative and multidisciplinary care, and his responsiveness to individual patient preferences, needs and values. 

A plastic surgeon, Dr. Petropolis provides specialized care for trauma and skin cancer cases. He has made a name for himself through his expertise with 3D printing, including designing N95 masks during a pandemic supply shortage and creating models for students to practice intricate surgeries. He’s also highly regarded as a dedicated educator for medical learners.

Recognized nationally by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and celebrated provincially as a Distinguished Alumni at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Reitmeier’s leadership is indisputable. Even in the face of political hostility, he remains a fierce advocate for sexual and gender diverse communities. Standing as a proud 2SLGBTQIA+ physician he is making extraordinary contributions to healthcare.

Dr. Singh is a family physician at Thompson Clinic. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Northern Health Region and previously served as Primary Care Medical Director, Co-Lead of Shared Health Primary Health team and Champion for Physician Health and Wellness. Dr. Singh received Manitoba’s Health Innovation Award and is a Certified Physician Executive. He has been hailed as a leader and a visionary by colleagues, and he is committed to achieving accessible quality care for all Manitobans.

Dr. Thompson’s advocacy and leadership are widely recognized by his peers and his patients. As a leader, he has served as President for both PARIM and Doctors Manitoba and is now the acting Chief Medical Officer for St. Boniface Hospital. As an advocate, he has passionately pursued better health care both through internal channels and as a highly authentic spokesperson.

Dr. Woodrow is one of only five fellowship-trained cancer rehabilitation physiatrists in Canada and the only one outside of Calgary and Toronto. She started the province’s cancer rehabilitation program and is developing a prehabilitation program with CancerCare. She is a passionate mentor to learners interested in all areas of medicine, mentoring with a person-first approach. She has many roles in Manitoba’s postgraduate physiatry program, including being on the CaRMS selection committee and acting as the wellness lead.
