Strategic Plan

Doctors Manitoba exists to strengthen and support the whole physician, so you can focus on delivering exceptional care to Manitobans.

We are guided by our strategic plan, which was approved by our Board of Directors and presented to our members at our Annual General Meeting in May 2024. It’s based on feedback from hundreds of physicians, resident physicians, and medical students, to ensure we are focused on the right priorities, services, and advocacy for our members.

Our new strategic plan (20242028) builds on our last plan, continuing the vision and mission that has guided our work. Our strategic pillars have evolved to reflect today’s priorities for the profession, and we’ve introduced two foundational elements that are integrated into everything we do: supporting physician health and wellness, and pursuing equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization within the profession and health system.

Learn more about our strategic plan below, and reach out if you have feedback or suggestions on how Doctors Manitoba can serve you better.

Ensure the economic well-being of all physicians

Doctors Manitoba has a traditional role in negotiating remuneration for physicians.

Manitoba has a record shortage of physicians. Ensuring Manitoba offers fair and competitive remuneration compared to other Canadian jurisdictions is important to retaining and recruiting more doctors while also improving access to high quality medical care for patients.

This will always be a key part of what Doctors Manitoba does. We are focusing on:

  • Advocating for competitive and innovative remuneration.
  • Ensuring equitable compensation across regions and disciplines, including taking steps to close gaps in remuneration based on gender, race and ethnicity.
  • Modernizing remuneration to respond to changing needs and expectations of physicians.
Help physicians be physicians

Being a physician has become more complicated, with more paperwork, administrative tasks, and an overly complicated health system getting in the way of caring for your patients. This new strategic pillar signals that Doctors Manitoba has heard you, and we are leaning in hard to help.

We are focusing on:

  • Reducing administrative burden and unpaid work.
  • Advocating for physician-led, team-based care.
  • Facilitating diverse physician leadership within the health care team and in the health system.

We want all physicians to find their calling, regardless of their identity. We are here to work with physicians, residents and students who experience barriers and to disrupt racism and discrimination in the profession.

Deliver exceptional service and support

We are with physicians and medical learners, every step of the way, and that means ensuring our services are highly responsive to meeting your needs at all stages of your career.

We are focusing on:

  • Responding to member inquiries promptly and resolving them as quickly as possible.
  • Developing new supports at career transitions, including on the business side of medicine” and the many professional obligations physicians must fulfill.
  • Ensuring all members are aware of the services and resources available to them through Doctors Manitoba.
Be the influential voice for physicians in Manitoba

We have taken on a stronger role to share physicians’ expertise with the public and to advocate for the improvements needed in health care for physicians and their patients.

We are focusing on:

  • Ensuring we understand what physicians and medical learners need through regular consultation and engagement.
  • Maintaining a credible, balanced approach to advocacy while ensuring this work is visible to our members.
  • Ensuring physician’s expertise and deep care for Manitoban’s health and well-being are seen and heard by the public.
  • Profiling the professional and personal diversity and excellence of physicians and medical learners in Manitoba.
Cultivate physician unity

We are strongest as a profession when we support each other and act together to get the resources and supports that physicians and medical learners need.

We are focusing on:

  • Bringing physicians together as we push to improve and stabilize a health care system that has been under resourced and under constant structural change for years.
  • Connecting physicians and medical learners with the broader medical community through both professional and social opportunities.
  • Advocating for medical learner needs by raising awareness of the many supports and resources available to students and residents through Doctors Manitoba.
