U.S. Recruitment Progress
More news this week on efforts to recruit more American physicians to Manitoba. Doctors Manitoba started our advocacy days after the U.S. election last fall, including creating a website and running ads in several states to appeal to our American colleagues.
We are encouraged this week to see both the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) and the provincial government take significant steps to boost Manitoba’s recruitment of U.S. physicians, following our recommendations.
CPSM has approved an expedited pathway to licensure for qualified U.S. Doctors. By eliminating the application for provisional registration, this action removes barriers that made Manitoba less competitive and attractive for U.S. recruitment, while ensuring U.S. licensed physicians relocating to Manitoba meet our high standards.
The Manitoba Government launched its own advertising campaign focused on doctors and health care workers in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota The ad campaign is a welcome addition, following one we launched about six months ago, just after the U.S. election. It also joins campaigns already launched by other provinces. Manitoba has also launched a recruitment website at practiceinmanitoba.ca.
Meanwhile, we have continued our outreach on U.S. recruitment. In fact, we received nearly ten calls in just the last week after we were featured in a widely circulated U.S. news wire story and on CBC’s The National. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Alison Carleton, who moved from Iowa to Winnipegosis in 2017 and has been an outspoken, indefatigable champion of living and practicing in Manitoba.
📻 Dr. Desilets has been on the radio and this morning’s Free Press to highlight how our advocacy work helped lead to these significant changes.
Physicians are the best recruiters of physicians. Here’s how you can get involved:
Attend a Recruitment Webinar on June 22: Physicians interested in learning more about how colleagues in the U.S., U.K., Ireland or Australia can practice in Manitoba are encouraged to attend this webinar. Spread the word! Register here.
Send an Email to U.S. Colleagues! If you are interested in writing to your U.S. colleagues encouraging them to make Manitoba home, we can help! Send an email to general@doctorsmanitoba.ca and we’ll provide a template you can work off to send far and wide. We will even help you track down email addresses.
Engage with the Provincial Recruitment Agency: Potential recruits and practices looking for help with recruiting can request one-on-one help from the new provincial recruitment agency, at no charge. Read more about the Health Care Retention and Recruitment Office in our summary, with instructions on how to request help.
Why are we doing this? In our 2025 Annual Physician Survey, you ranked the doctor shortage in Manitoba as your top concern. You are feeling the impact of the shortage in your practice, and are concerned about how it’s impacting your patients. That’s why we are continuing our nationally-recognized campaign to attract U.S. doctors to Manitoba as one part of our efforts to ease our physician shortage. Please do contact us at practiceadvice@doctorsmanitoba.ca if you have suggestions or if you need help navigating recruitment. We are with you, every step of the way.
