Physician Safety and Well-Being
Your safety is our top priority, and we continue to advocate in public and in private meetings for broader supports to address long-standing safety concerns at larger hospitals and clinics.
Recent Concerns
In the wake of five sexual assaults on and around HSC campus this month, and a Free Press story this week respecting a report that details significant safety concerns at Klinic in downtown Winnipeg, we have been urging provincial and health system leaders to ramp up efforts to ensure you are able to practice in the safe environments you, your patients, and staff need and deserve. We know that most safety incidents never make the headlines, and that makes it all the more important in our work to address your concerns and help prevent them in the first place.
Bottom line, doctors and medical learners should feel safe and be free from physical and psychological harm.
Our Take
Especially at community clinics and ACCESS centres, we have urged leaders to implement broader supports that more readily ensure physician, staff, and patient safety. We know that physicians working in these clinics see their work as impactful and rewarding, especially in trauma-informed care, trans health, addictions, and crisis response.
To support your ability to provide exceptional care to patients, leaders must ensure they are implementing and consistently maintaining robust safety policies, and maximizing the efficiency of scheduling, referrals and diagnostics to ensure physicians are able to meet their professional duties to provide a high level of service to all patients.
