Help Shape the Future of Child Care in Manitoba
We often hear from physicians who struggle with finding child care, and so we invite you to add your views to an important consultation now underway.
Over 46% of our members have children under the age of 18 according to our 2025 Annual Physician Survey. This same survey found physicians with caregiving responsibilities have significantly higher rates of burnout than those who do not. Access to reliable and quality child care can help to reduce burnout.
Dr. Selena Papetti, one of our 2025 Physicians of the Year, knows this well.
“The only time I’ve thought about moving my practice out of my rural community was when I couldn’t find childcare,” explained Dr. Papetti, a family physician in Lac du Bonnet. “Childcare is an essential part of recruiting and retaining doctors and is a pillar of public health. It’s vital for physicians and medical learners to share their views on the future of childcare in our province.”
We have been pressing for more child care options for physicians and health professionals, including writing last year to the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning. The government has taken action, announcing 324 spaces in three health facilities. We will continue to advocate for more options to help physicians balance their work and family responsibilities.
