Health System Updates — March 20, 2026
New Personal Care Home Proposed for Winnipeg
The Manitoba government confirmed plans to move ahead with a new personal care home in the Bridgwater neighbourhood of Waverly West in Winnipeg, beginning public consultations in June.
Yes, but: While more long term care capacity is certainly an important needed move, this PCH was actually originally announced over a decade ago in 2015, but was left in limbo and delayed by successive changes in government.
Record Number of ICU Nurses to Graduate
A record 45 ICU nurses are completing specialized critical care training this spring and preparing to work in hospitals across the province, nearly double the average class size. They will take up posts at St. Boniface, HSC, Grace, and Brandon hospitals.
We spoke with the Free Press, welcoming the news. We noted one of the top concerns we hear from you is that we need more ICU beds to keep up with our growing population and this plays a major role in addressing those gaps.
Inaccurate ER Wait Predictions
This week, news broke about an internal memo saying the system that predicts ER wait times in Winnipeg had multiple flaws that means waits sometimes appear lower than they should.
We spoke with CBC Manitoba and the Free Press, noting doctors strive for accuracy in everything they do, and that they would expect the information the health system shares with patients be held to the same standard.
Nourishment Through Food and Mentorship!
Members of the Doctors Manitoba Mentorship Program gathered on Monday for a hands-on culinary experience.
What happened: The Nourish and Network event brought mentors and learners together at The Food Studio for an evening of cooking and conversation.
Participants worked side by side to prepare a fresh citrus salad, hand-rolled spinach ravioli with homemade pasta dough, and crepes for dessert. The relaxed setting created space for informal mentorship and meaningful conversations over a shared meal.
What’s next: Our spring mentorship event takes place on April 20 at Kilter Brewing Co.
