Vaccine and pediatric specialists will respond to vaccine questions from parents and children.

Manitobans are invited to join an online town hall hosted by Doctors Manitoba on November 30 focused on the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine, authorized today by Health Canada for children age five to 11. Parents and children will be able to ask questions about the vaccine and get answers directly from a panel of medical experts.

It’s only natural to have questions about a new vaccine, especially when it’s for children, and that’s why we’ve planned this town hall,” said Dr. Kristjan Thompson, President of Doctors Manitoba. Hundreds of pediatricians and family physicians across the province are also ready to answer questions one-on-one, and in many cases they will be offering the vaccine in their clinic too.“

The vaccine town hall is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30, at 7:00PM. Topics will include the risks to children from COVID-19, the benefits and risks of vaccination, and the safety and effectiveness of the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine.

Manitobans can submit questions in advance or register for a reminder email at ManitobaVaccine.ca/townhall. Questions can also be submitted during the live event. The town hall will be broadcast live on YouTube

The panel of medical experts will include:

  • Dr. Marni Hanna, President of the Manitoba Pediatric Society
  • Dr. Ruth Grimes, President of the Canadian Paediatric Society
  • Dr. Jared Bullard, Section Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Associate Medical Director of Cadham Lab
  • Dr. Joss Reimer, provincial COVID-19 vaccine Medical Lead and Medical Officer of Health
  • Dr. Ashley Chopek, pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant specialist

As a pediatrician, I want to ensure all parents have the facts to make a fully-informed decision about the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Dr. Ruth Grimes, President of the Canadian Paediatric Society.“The vaccine will offer protection against COVID-19 and related complications. It will also help to protect those around you, and avoid disruptions to our everyday lives.”

Once the pediatric vaccine is available, pediatricians and physicians offering the vaccine will be added to ManitobaVaccine.ca. The site, created by physicians about COVID-19 vaccines, will also be updated with answers to common questions about the pediatric vaccines.
