The provincial government has committed to modernizing Health Links — Info Santé into an expanded health advice service, with medical advice available and a more accessible three-digit phone number: 811

Health Links has offered nurse-managed telephone patient support for decades. As part of the government’s Lower Wait Times Strategy, the transition to 811 is intended to support better telephone advice and triaging, redirecting some low-acuity cases away from ERs.

Physician Opportunity

As part of the preparations to launch 811, planning is underway to develop a 24-hour Virtual Integrated Clinical Service, or VICS, staffed by family doctors and nurse practitioners offering phone and video patient assessment to support the 811 team, while also supporting continuity with primary care providers by information sharing with Home Clinics. The VICS is another step in strengthening primary care access in Manitoba.

Physician feedback will guide the planning, with the goal of offering clerical support for investigation ordering, clear guidance on patient disposition, competitive remuneration, and on-call support to address waiting times. The VICS providers will be able to provide input into the nursing protocols at 811 based on experience in the service.
