Health System Updates

The government is moving forward with plans to open episodic care clinics, including a Minor Injury and Illness Clinic in Brandon and Extended Hours Primary Care Clinics in Winnipeg.

The first Winnipeg clinic was announced this week by the Premier, and is now open by Grace Hospital, offering evening and weekend primary care. It will be open after hours from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. during the week, 1:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on weekends and offer special hours during the holidays. Patients can register for same-day appointments online at https://myrightcare.ca and some walk-in spots will be available every day.

After an initial lack of engagement about these new clinics and remuneration model, Doctors Manitoba and the government agreed to a flexible model that promotes a connection with Home Clinics. See more about the clinic model and remuneration here, including how to express an interest to work a shift or two per month.

More of these clinics will be opened adjacent to other Winnipeg hospitals.

Meanwhile, a minor injury and illness clinic was announced for Brandon, to be located at the old Western Clinic location on Sixth Street. Again, there was a lack of engagement about the clinic model and location, and a remuneration model is still not finalized.

The main concern about these clinics is the risk of drawing resources away from existing clinics, which are already struggling to recruit and retain enough doctors to meet patient needs. This is a point we made in this Brandon Sun article last week.

MAiD assessment education

Attention MDs who want to learn more about the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Service in Manitoba.

There will be a free CME accredited virtual education session called How to do a MAiD assessment” available to all interested Manitoba physicians October 19, 2024. This session will be led by Dr. Kim Wiebe (MAiD Medical Director) and Dr. Maegan Springman (MAiD Assessor/Provider) who have both been certified by the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP) to teach this session. The session will cover what is involved in a MAiD assessment, the difference between the two MAiD tracks (those who have a reasonably foreseeable death and those who do not) and provide tools for self-care.

Note: this is not a session intended to recruit MAiD providers, this is a session to provide more information about the Manitoba MAiD program so that you can help your patients through the process, answer their basic questions and know when to refer your patients.

Click here for more information and to sign up for the session.
