Registration for our 2023 Getting Healthy Golf Tournament closes next Thursday and we would love to see you out on the course. This year’s tournament will be held at Southwood Golf & Country Club, which happens to be hosting the Manitoba Open this week. Mentorship Program is Recruiting Mentors

Doctors Manitoba, MMSA, PARIM, PGME and UGME Student Affairs are excited to be moving into a new year of the Medical Learner Mentorship Program. Recruitment for participants is ongoing and no previous mentoring experience is required. Residents and Practicing Physicians are invited to participate as mentors. The program offers a variety of support for participants including mentorship events and complimentary training through CMA-Joule! The program is an excellent way to build connections help those joining the profession.

Response to our Prescription for Health Care

Last week we offered a prescription for Improving health care and we received widespread coverage in the media, with all three main political parties in Manitoba responding with support. 

PC Response:

The CBC quoted Progressive Conservative Leader Heather Stefanson as thanking Doctors Manitoba for their recommendations, saying that her party will continue building a strong relationship with the organization if re-elected and is ​“committed to healing health care. We know health care didn’t break overnight, and we know it won’t get fixed overnight — but we are on the road to recovery,” she said, adding that the party will release more details about its health-care plan further into the campaign. 

NDP Response:

NDP Leader Wab Kinew said Doctors Manitoba’s recommendations ​“perfectly” align with his party’s health-care platform, adding the New Democrats will flesh out more about their plans in the weeks to come, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. When it comes to the focus on primary care teams, he was quoted in the CBC as saying “[it’s] something that we know experts are calling for, but also meets the needs of Manitobans.” He was also quoted as saying the target of recruiting 400 new doctors could be reached in the next five years, partially through an NDP promise to expand the University of Manitoba’s medical school that was announced last month.

Liberal Response:

The Free Press quoted Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont as insisting his party’s platform is the one that aligns most closely with Doctors Manitoba’s recommendations. ​“To really change health care for the better in Manitoba, we need a revolution in prevention,” Lamont said. ​“We’ve committed to that by making sure every Manitoban has a clinic with a family physician, or nurse practitioner, with wrap-around care from health teams.” Lamont said his party also plans to expand team-based care in clinics.

Physician of the Week

Like many rural physicians, Dr. Sheila Felsch, wears many hats as a community doctor in Portage la Prairie. The initial draw to medicine came from her fascination with human physiology, but Dr. Felsch says she quickly ​“came to love helping people, hearing their stories, forming long term connections with my family practice patients, and helping them feel at ease in the OR and ER settings.” She says her favourite part of practising medicine is getting work with ​“so many other amazing and caring individuals”. She is proud to work with an incredible team of physicians, nurses and support staff, and says most days it feels like she is ​“hanging out with my friends while we work together to help others feel better.” Patient Rachel Templeton says Dr. Felsch is ​“the epitome of caring” and the best physician she has ever had, adding ​“she goes above and beyond the call of duty and is an excellent communicator.”

125 New Medical Students

This week UM welcomed its largest medical class in its 140-year history. Enrolment has been increased from 110 to 125 students. The Class of 2027 includes 66 women, 57 men and two students who identify as non-binary. There are 10 Indigenous students and 59 students with rural attributes, meaning that they have rural roots, work experience or volunteer or leadership experience. Five students are enrolled in the bilingual stream. The future physicians range in age from 20 to 38 years old. Dean of the Max Rady College of Medicine, dean of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and vice-provost (health sciences), Dr. Peter Nickerson said ​“expanding our MD program to train more physicians is an important step toward meeting the health-care needs of all Manitobans as the population grows and ages.” The expanded class size comes a year after Doctors Manitoba advocacy and recommendations to expand medical training to address the physician shortage. Diabetes Survey for Physicians
Youville Diabetes Centre in collaboration with health care practitioners is working to identify the gaps in diabetes health care services, education, resources, and supports available for persons living with diabetes. They would like to know what information will be most useful to physicians in Manitoba, in providing care and education for persons living with diabetes. Holistic and Cultural Approach To Increasing Immunization Uptake
Manitoba Health is sharing the below invitation to participate in a webinar hosted by the Indigenous Services Canada on August 31st, 2023 at 12 pm. The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is pleased to invite you to a virtual event on the successful immunization project carried out by Maskwacis Health Services’ Early Years Program. By offering program participants various supports, such as parenting guidance and strategies, transportation and assistance with service referrals, staff members quickly noticed that involvement in the program led to an increase in immunization uptake in young children in Maskwacis. This presentation will provide valuable insight into the importance of collaborating with various teams within a community and integrating cultural components into programming for success. We invite all professionals involved in supporting or providing immunizations to First Nations, Inuit, or Métis Peoples in Canada to attend. This includes nurses, community leadership, early education teams, community health representatives, health directors, and any other professionals contributing to this important work in public health. Gender Affirming Care Research

Chloe Macdonald is recruiting physicians to participate in a qualitativeresearch study that aims to understand physicians’ experiences and perceptions of gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 18. Unraveling the Threads of Colonization and Racism in Manitoba’s Healthcare — September 28 6:30 – 8p

Session 5 in our Leadership for Equity Series aims to empower physicians with a deeper comprehension of the intricate intersections between historical legacies, healthcare delivery, and the imperative for transformative change in support of health equity for Indigenous populations in Manitoba. It will explore the historical underpinnings of colonization and Indigenous-specific racism within the healthcare system, highlighting their enduring influence on the health of Indigenous communities. The session will emphasize the importance of physicians, as leaders in the healthcare system, learning to recognize the subtle yet impactful manifestations of these issues in healthcare and carrying this into application of practical strategies for fostering anti-racist and decolonizing practices. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Gain insight into the historical background of colonization and racism within Manitoba’s healthcare system and how this continues to impact the health of Indigenous peoples.

Nationally and internationally recognized experts will present timely topics in infectious diseases and public health at Manitoba’s largest healthcare education event. Held every year during National Infection Prevention & Control Week, Bug Day is streamed online – it’s FREE, accredited, and you’re invited!

The program is accredited for physicians and can be used for continuing education purposes by other health care workers. There is no charge, but you must register to attend the live sessions.
