Doctors Manitoba is pleased to present learning opportunities for physicians interested or involved in leadership:

Biographies of the experienced facilitation team, Tom Lloyd, LLM, MB ChB, MD, COC, ACC, MRCS, MFFLM and Dawn Martin, PhD, MEd, MSW, RSW, can be found below. This team is also facilitating our Physician Leadership Practical Skills Series.

Fee/​Registration: No cost to attend. Registration required. Cap of 10 participants per group. Acceptance based on eligibility. All sessions are virtual.

1. Physician Leadership: Supports for Future Leaders 

With the right skills and supports, physician leaders can play a key role in reducing burnout, increasing satisfaction of teams, and improving the health care system. Leadership can be incredibly rewarding, as you have an opportunity to make a real difference. Successful leaders need strong self/​relational awareness and management skills because people management is a large part of the job. This workshop series is for future leaders who are wanting to develop skills and learn strategies to set themselves up for success. 

In this small group workshop series, we will address: 

  • Self/​relational awareness and management and its importance for leadership 
  • Boundary setting for self, others and the group 
  • Preventing misunderstanding, managing difference and resolving conflict 
  • Preparing you to integrate these strategies into a leadership philosophy for success

Reflect and connect with colleagues in a safe, confidential space where you will receive coaching from two experts with over 45 years of combined experience with physician leadership and teams. Opportunities for feedback, interactive exercises, readings and resources will be provided, as well as three follow up group meetings for integration and problem solving. 

Eligibility:

  • Must be considering or planning to accept a formal leadership position (or currently in a formal leadership position).
  • Must be available for all sessions and be able to fully participate in interactive group learning. 

Dates/​Times: February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th (NEW). at 6.30 – 8.30pm

Follow up sessions March 20th, April 17th and May 22nd 6.30 – 7.30pm

2. Physician Leadership: Supports for New and Established Leaders 

Leading can be incredibly rewarding, as you have an opportunity to make a real difference. At the same time, leaders can sometimes feel isolated when dealing with the challenges of people management, a large part of the job. Successful leaders need strong self/​relational awareness and management skills. This workshop series is for both new and experienced leaders who are wanting to enhance their skills and learn new strategies to apply with their teams.

In this small group workshop series, we will address: 

  • Self/​relational awareness and management 
  • Boundary setting for self, others and the group 
  • Managing unprofessional behaviour in your department

  • Lessons learned from common mistakes 

Reflect and connect with colleagues in a safe, confidential space where you will receive coaching from two experts with over 45 years of combined experience with physician leadership and teams. Opportunities to receive tailored feedback about challenging scenarios and problems will be provided, alongside role-modelling, interactive exercises, readings, resources and three follow up group meetings for integration and problem solving. 

Eligibility:

  • Must be in a formal leadership position. 
  • Must be available for all sessions and be able to fully participate in interactive group learning. 

Dates/​Times: February 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th6:30 – 8:30pm.

Follow up sessions March 12th, April 23rd and May 14th at 6.30pm‑7.30pm

Meet our Facilitators

Tom Lloyd LLM, MB ChB, MD, COC, ACC, MRCSMFFLM

Tom originally trained in general surgery in the UK and has spent over 20 years assisting physicians through medicolegal difficulties in Canada and internationally. This has included regulatory issues and organizational conflicts. More recently through Saegis (CMPA subsidiary) he developed and delivered programs for individuals and teams focused on communication, collaboration, psychological safety and Just Culture. Currently he works with healthcare organizations in need of assistance, as well as coaching physicians, healthcare professionals and teams wanting to improve their performance.

Dawn Martin PhD, MEd, MSWRSW

For almost 30 years, Dawn has worked extensively with practising physicians, leadership, faculty, varying levels of medical trainees, International Medical Graduates and regulated health professionals throughout Ontario and other parts of Canada. Dawn’s current work focuses on assessing and skill building in communication, collaboration, and leadership.
