The evening spotlighted 40 extraordinary individuals who have not only excelled in the medical field but are examples of change, resilience, and compassion. From the countless inspiring and impressive nominees, the awards committee had difficulty choosing 40 medical learners and physicians who have left an indelible mark through their education and work in medicine. Those honoured show exemplary commitment and excellence in research, clinical practice, education, leadership, and advocacy for the betterment of patient care and the well-being of physicians and students.

Reflecting the diverse tapestry of Manitoba and its medical community, the recipients included 9 students, 10 residents, and 21 practicing physicians, hailing from different corners of the province. Board President, Dr. Michael Boroditsky, expressed his admiration saying, The Top 40 are a truly amazing group from our medical community who give me hope about the future of our profession and the care Manitobans will be able to count on.”

With MMSA board representative Taylor Nimchonok and Dr. Michael Boroditsky serving as emcees, the evening included delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts, bar service, a live DJ and dance floor, a casino courtesy of MD Financial and Scotiabank and a photo booth courtesy of Bokhaut CPA LLP. The highlightof the evening was the short awards ceremony, with each group taking their much-deserved time in the limelight. Representatives from each group took the stage, sharing heartfelt words that resonated with every attendee.

Practicing Family Physician, Dr. Shayne Reitmeier highlighted the challenges of leadership in the medical field. He acknowledged the struggles and sacrifices made by each awardee, emphasizing that leadership can be isolating, and advocating for silenced voices isn’t always popular. He commended the Top 40 for breaking barriers and reshaping societal norms, asserting that their commitment to excellence is transforming the medical landscape.

Dr. Tegan Turner, an Emergency Medicine resident, offered a glimpse into the challenges faced by those in the early stages of their medical careers. Expressing the risk of burnout, she also celebrated the exceptional rewards that come from collaboration with allied healthcare professionals, medical students, and seasoned doctors. Dr. Turner’s optimism for the future of medicine in Manitoba was evident when she praised the diverse range of specialties and backgrounds within the group of residents.

Medical student Nolan DeLeon captured the essence of the students’ journey. He humbly explained the self-doubt that plagues many budding medical professionals, but rallied students to shrug off imposter syndrome, reminding everyone that being among the Top 40 was a testament to their commitment to the meaningful and compassionate practice of medicine. Nolan emphasized that the award serves as a reminder of why they chose this path — to make a difference in the lives of others.

As Nolan aptly put it, Medicine isn’t so much about knowing. Medicine is about growing. It’s about remembering what’s important and bringing the art back into humanity.” His words echoed the sentiment that the award is not just a recognition of past achievements but a beacon guiding them on their journey to becoming compassionate, impactful healthcare professionals.

The Top 40 Under 40 event was not just a celebration; it was a testament to the transformative power of dedication, resilience, and compassion in the medical field. These individuals are not merely recipients of an award; they are architects of a future healthcare system that values humanity, inclusivity, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of both patients and practitioners.
