The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) form has long been one of the top administrative burdens cited by physicians. Manitoba is now the first province to test a dramatically shorter renewal process, thanks to our partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and their openness and hard work to improve their processes.

What’s new: Starting December 2025, the CRA is piloting a 2‑page DTC renewal form in Manitoba, replacing the full 16-page T2201 for eligible patients whose impairments have not significantly improved. The pilot runs until June 2026

  • Over 2,000 DTC renewals are expected in Manitoba in the next year. Each would have required the full 16-page form — now replaced, for eligible patients, with a concise 2‑page version.

How it works:

  • The CRA will invite eligible Manitobans directly by letter. The letter will confirm that the patient would normally complete a full T2201 DTC form, but instead can use the shorter pilot renewal form (T2221).
  • Physicians complete Part B of the T2221 (page 2), simply confirming whether impairments are unchanged or have worsened.
  • If a patient has a new impairment or a significant change, they must still complete the full T2201
  • All practitioner types who can normally certify DTC categories may also certify the renewal (e.g., MDs and NPs for all impairments; optometrists for vision; psychologists for mental functions, etc.).

Remember, the pilot is limited. It is only for eligible renewals as a pilot. Full initial applications for the DTC still require the full T2201 form.

Between the lines: Early physician feedback to Doctors Manitoba suggests this shorter renewal could meaningfully reduce administrative burden. We will monitor the pilot closely and advocate for further improvements — including a review of the standard DTC form if the trial proves successful.

  • The CRA form will include a QR code linking to a survey for physicians to evaluate the new process, and we strongly encourage physicians to participate.

Bottom line: A simpler process is finally being tested. For many physicians, this could mean less paperwork — and more time with patients.
