The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) has directed that starting this fall, several codeine-containing products, including Tylenol #3, Tylenol #2, and Cotridin will be added to the M3P drug list.

  • The reason: The CPSM advises they are adding these products to the M3P Program (which monitors high-risk prescription drugs) to increase public safety by reducing prescription forgery and diversion.

  • What this means for you: All M3P prescriptions, including Tylenol #3, must be recorded under the new Standard. The CPSM advises this can be done by using the free-type field in your EMR
  • If your practice is paper-based, M3P templates are available in the CPSM Portal (registrant login required).
  • CPSM reminds us that the old M3P prescription booklets (triplicate/duplicate pads) are no longer needed (or available).

  • Administrative burden concerns: When the consultation process was announced earlier this year, we asked for your thoughts. We heard the concerns of some members about the additional administrative burden this will carry. We brought your concerns forward in our written submission to CPSM. The CPSM advises that they have tried to minimize this burden as best as possible.

If you need assistance, the CPSM’s Prescribing Practices Program can assist you with streamlining your EMR M3P prescription template for maximum efficiency. Phone 2047744344 and ask for the Prescribing Practices Program.
