Doctors Manitoba collects expanded demographic information from members including about racial, ethnic, and Indigenous identity. Participation is optional. This was added in 2023 to respond to member requests to have more diverse options, and our desire to better understand serious issues affecting the profession like burnout and mistreatment. Additionally, in 2023, the membership voted to require Doctors Manitoba to report on the personal attributes of the Board of Directors and committees to ensure they are reflective of the broader membership.

The response options were designed based on approaches used by Shared Health, the Canadian census, and the Canadian Institute for Health Information, as well as a review of our membership. The response options and definitions include:

  • Indigenous (e.g. First Nation, Métis, Inuk/Inuit)
  • Black (e.g. African, Afro-Caribbean, African Canadian)
  • Latin American (e.g. Hispanic, including Argentina, Cuba, El Salvador, Guyana, Mexico, etc.)
  • Middle Eastern (e.g. Arab, Persian, West Asian including Iranian, Egyptian, Kurdish, Lebanese, Turkish, etc.)
  • South Asian (e.g. East Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, etc.)
  • Southeast Asian (e.g. Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, etc.)
  • Francophone (mother tongue is French or have special affinity for French language in daily life)
  • White (European, British, French, etc.)

Members can also select Other and self-describe their identity, or select Prefer Not To Say.
