Doctors Manitoba is looking for a Practice Advisor to join its Practice Advice and Compensation Team. This role will work closely with physicians to support their professional and economic well-being.
A key focus of this position will be on the professional and business aspects of practicing medicine, ensuring physicians have all the necessary tools and resources to thrive as independent medical practitioners. The Practice Advisor will develop and present a variety of educational materials to physicians independently and in group settings, offering advice personalized for individuals and tailored to different professional groups and practice styles. Expertise in engaging and educating busy professionals, as well as excelling in group facilitation and problem solving will be critical for this role. Education and experience in business areas such as human resources, finance, operations, and marketing, preferably in a healthcare setting, will be very important.
Familiarity with the health care system is an asset, particularly in areas such as managing clinic operations or expertise in physician remuneration. A commitment to personalized customer service for busy professionals is important as the role involves respectfully listening to physician concerns about their practice, offering advice, and escalating concerns for resolution as part of the broader Doctors Manitoba negotiations, advocacy and physician health teams.

Practice Advisor – Role and Responsibilities
Key duties include:
- Providing advice and support to fee-for-service physicians related to appropriately interpreting the Physician’s Manual and navigating claims submission.
- Provide advice and support to physicians compensated through an alternate funding agreement, including contract interpretation.
- Engaging physicians regarding system issues or issues affecting their practices beyond billing and remuneration, such as optimizing clinic operations, improving throughput and patient access, and other business and professional obligations physicians must fulfill in their practice.
- Identifying themes and escalating more complex concerns to the appropriate staff members at Doctors Manitoba.
- Developing and updating resources, such as articles and guides, slide decks, webinars and other tools, to support physicians.
- Meeting with members one-on-one and in group sessions to deliver advice, education and/or to understand concerns or issues and jointly develop potential solutions.
Other duties include:
- Supporting the Physician Services Agreement negotiations cycle.
- Supporting work with blocs of practice, other organizations and individuals as necessary to advocate for and enhance member’s professional and economic interests.
- Supporting the development (research and writing) of policy and position papers, environmental scans, and other materials related to physician remuneration and health system advocacy.
Practice Advisor – Qualifications
Education:
- Post-secondary education and/or equivalent combination of experience and knowledge in relevant areas such as management (business/public/health service administration), adult education, sales/marketing, and/or labour relations.
- Education or experience in sciences or a health profession is an asset to understand medical terminology and procedures.
Qualifications include:
- 5+ years of experience in relevant areas, such as labour relations, health system or clinic management/administration, sales or marketing, or adult education.
- Extensive knowledge of physician compensation, fee-for-service claims submission process, collective bargaining, regulatory environment for medicine, physician practice operations, continuing medical education and/or other aspects a physician’s professional responsibilities and duties.
- Excellence in critical thinking, problem-solving, organization, attention to detail, facilitation and negotiation, spoken and written communication, active listening, conflict resolution, social grace.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Experience preparing complex reports or documents.
- Ability to synthesize complex ideas and concepts and communicate them to diverse audiences.
- Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work with diverse multi-disciplinary teams.
- Access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license.
Work Environment
This position will be a combination of in-office and remote work. Daytime, evening, and some weekend hours will be required. Extensive travel throughout Manitoba to meet with physician members will be expected with some national travel based on need.
