Doctors Manitoba is pleased to represent the entire medical profession in Manitoba, not just those who have already graduated from medical school. Medical students are at the forefront of the medical profession, providing Doctors Manitoba will invaluable input and involvement.
Doctors Manitoba regularly meets with medical students to determine how best to enhance their role within the medical profession while allowing them to focus on their studies. Doctors Manitoba also provides financial support for select medical students to attend the CFMS Spring Meeting and Annual Meeting as well as the Canadian Medical Association General Council.
These are just some of the ways that Doctors Manitoba and medical students work together.
Doctors Manitoba provides free membership in Doctors Manitoba. We also pay Canadian Medical Association membership fees for all interested medical students.
Medical students have exclusive access to all the programs and services offered by Doctors Manitoba and the CMA. Medical students, as an important part of the medical profession, will be kept informed of all current financial and political issues, and receive the same communications as other members of the profession.
Medical students also receive exclusive access to the members’ section of the CMA web site, cma.ca, a valuable benefit to trainees. The site provides free access to over 1,000 full text online journals and books, a medication database, and medical information search capabilities, including access to a research librarian.
You also have full access to the services offered by MD Financial Management, which is the financial planning division of the Canadian Medical Association. For example, free advice on debt management and an attractive banking package are available.
Working with medical students so closely over the years has allowed us to develop insurance specifically for you. We believe it is crucial for medical students to have disability insurance so we created a policy just for you. Our goal is to provide you with the best, most reliable information and options, all on a not-for-profit basis.

We want to keep you up to speed on hot-button issues within the medical profession or that may enhance or hinder your ability to learn and provide top-notch medical care. You pick the topic and we’ll talk to you about it in a clear, concise, honest way. And lunch is on us!
For many years Doctors Manitoba has been providing an annual grant of about $7,000 to the Manitoba Medical Students Association. We impose no restrictions on the use of these funds, knowing that they will consult with medical students and put the funds to the best possible use. In recent years, the MMSA has used to money to help fund the activities of the numerous interest groups formed by medical students.
The MMSA annually appoints one of its members, typically the MMSA Vice-President External, to attend Doctors Manitoba Board meetings as an observer. This allows medical students to be a part of the decisions made by the Doctors Manitoba Board of Directors and to help shape the medical profession.
In addition, interested students are welcome to serve on various Doctors Manitoba committees, such as the Physician Health & Wellness Committee.
The Doctors Manitoba/CMA/MD Financial Management Bursary was established in 2000 following a generous donation from the Canadian Medical Foundation, the charitable arm of the CMA. Doctors Manitoba was able to raise matching funds locally through the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, and set in place a mechanism to implement the bursary. The principal amount now stands at over $160,000. The Max Rady College of Medicine Undergraduate Awards Committee annually allocates bursary funds to several deserving medical students. All such bursaries are based in part on student need.
In 2016, Doctors Manitoba was very pleased to work collaboratively with the MMSA and medical students as a whole to establish a brand new website dedicated just to medical students in Manitoba. It is a place that Manitoba’s medical students can call their own. Built in are several adaptable, functional applications designed to make the day-to-day life of a medical student just a little bit less hectic.
Doctors Manitoba was thrilled to fund the entire development, hosting and web support of the new MMSA website. We hope you like it, use it and provide your feedback about how to make it even better and useful! If you haven’t already done so, check it out here.
