Practical Advice for Mentors
- Participation is key! Meetings or phone calls should be long enough to have a meaningful conversation. Ideally, you will connect in a meaningful way with all those in your mentorship group in regular intervals throughout the year. There is an expectation that you will:
- Attend at least one individual meeting per student (or group meeting if the students prefer) as needed throughout the academic year (July to June)
- Attend two events with all those in the mentorship group (eg. lunch, dinner, coffee, clinic tour, meeting, etc.).
- A total time-commitment of close to 20 hours is not unrealistic
- Be open to feedback from those you are mentoring.
- Listen twice as much as you speak – ask open-ended questions.
- Be honest and candid with those you are mentoring
- Empower and encourage rather than solve – you are not responsible for their choices.
- Respect and value your limits and boundaries.
- Serve as a resource for those you are mentoring as well as other mentors.
- Note: Mentors will receive a small reimbursement for each meeting they have with those they are mentoring based on the total number of program participants and available funds.
Other Tips on how to be a Good Mentor
- Clarify objectives with those you are mentoring and evaluate progress.
- Ensure you are meeting in a safe, appropriate setting conducive to good conversation.
