COVID-19 – Update – March 18

Situation Update:

Late yesterday, 7 additional cases were identified, bringing the total count in Manitoba to 15. As of this morning, all but 1 have been confirmed to be travel-related, with investigation on the final case still underway. At the time of this email, no additional cases have been identified by provincial authorities. Over 2,100 people have been screened for COVID-19 at the new dedicated testing sites.

New testing sites have opened in Brandon, in addition to existing centres in Winnipeg, Thompson, The Pas and Flin Flon.

The public should first use the new online screening tool, and then may be directed to call Health Links. Screening centres are not walk-in; referrals from Health Links or a physician are required.

Review today’s provincial bulletin here.

Screening Clinic Rates

Doctors Manitoba has worked with provincial officials to confirm billing rates for those physicians stepping up to work in COVID-19 screening clinics.

Physicians will be offered the option of billing fee-for-service (standard existing rates) or billing hourly at new special rates. Hourly rates are as follows:

Hours Mon-Fri Sat/Sun/Stat
0800-1600 $168.70 $201.95
1600-2400 $201.95 $216.38
2400-0800 $230.80 $230.80

Child Care

Child care centres and schools are closing after this Friday, March 20. The province is helping to coordinate child care for front line providers, including physicians. To get your name on the list, you should let your day care staff know, and consider contacting the central child care line at contact 204-945-07761-888-213-4754 (toll-free) or

Call for help

We are taking names of physicians interested in helping out with COVID-19 screening or other health system needs. This includes retired and out-of-practice physicians. We now have confirmation from provincial officials that they will cover the fees associated with CPSM registration and CMPA insurance for temporary return to practice, as well as help you navigate the process. All physicians will and able to help should submit their name here. Your names will then be submitted to provincial health officials for follow up.

Meeting with Chief Provincial Public Health Officer

Last evening, your board had an exclusive meeting with Dr. Brent Roussin, CPPHO, along with Ms. Lanette Siragusa, Provincial Lead, Health System Integration, Quality/Chief Nursing Officer and Beth Beaupre, Provincial Lead for Health Workforce. This was a productive two-hour meeting where your concerns about everything from system capacity and screening and testing process, to protective equipment stocks and child care for physicians were discussed. We now also have daily calls with senior officials to rapidly raise and escalate physician concerns into the provincial incident command structure.
